2022 Take a Swing FORE ALS Sponsorship Invitation
our cause
On July 2, 2018, we lost a man that was important to us in so many ways. We lost a father, a husband, a grandfather, and a great friend.
David J. Machado was a passionate golfer. He had been a member of the Fall River Country Club for over 50 years. In addition to golfing year-round, it’s where he met his wife Suzanne and taught his son, Ben, how to play golf. He was well known at the course for his vibrant personality, his golf stories, and his accomplishments on the 3rd hole. In the fall of 2007, he had 3 holes in one using his 3 hybrid within 3 weeks. At 72 years old, David tied the course record, which was 64 at that time.
After experiencing a variety of symptoms of the disease for many months, finally, in January 2017, David was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Despite his symptoms, he was a determined golfer, intent on ‘getting his game back’. David and his son Ben won the consolation bracket of the Member-Member Club Tournament in August of 2016, just 5 months before David received his diagnosis.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The condition causes a lack of nourishment to the muscles, which in turn leads to the muscles degenerating or wasting away. As the disease progresses, motor neurons from the brain to the spinal cord also degenerate which causes loss of control of muscle movement. People with ALS may eventually lose the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe.
Many of us have heard of ALS and know that it’s a terrible disease but no one knows how truly terrible it is until they watch a loved one suffer from it. The transformation from an active, participating member of society to someone who relies solely on others is difficult to watch. However, David was a fighter and really believed that he could stop this disease, not giving up hope until the very end. Throughout his illness, David was able to be at home being cared for by his loving wife Suzanne, watching golf and westerns on TV, talking sports with his son and friends, and forming a bond with his granddaughter, Mae, who was his reason to smile.
David’s family and friends have organized this event to honor his memory and raise money for the ALS community. Proceeds from the event will go to two great organizations: the ALS Therapy Development Institute, a Cambridge, MA-based non-profit biotech working to discover and develop effective treatments for ALS, and the ALS Family Charitable Foundation, a Bourne, MA-based non-profit organization providing ALS patients and their families resources to lighten the burden of living with ALS.
We invite you to partner with us to take a swing for ALS! Thank you in advance for your consideration.
